Element Two: Plane, Volume, and Mass
Shattered
Project Overview
- The purpose of this project was the study the use of intersecting planes to make a form.
- This was achieved by placing planes perpendicular to each other.
- This was to be achieved using cardboard as the primary material.
- The project should be inspired by the works of Naum Gabo.
Project Assumptions
- Cardboard must be the primary material.
- The piece must on be painted.
My Assumptions
- I chose to not use the laser cutter due to my inexperience and time constraints.
- I chose to do a more abstract piece to help with my time constraints and creative block.
The Story
In the show Steven Universe, there a multi-eyed entities called 'Fusions.' The design of these Fusions typically include multiple sets of eyes, which inspired the many eyed face of this piece. The show also features a authoritarian government that will 'shatter' citizens who don't conform to societies norms. Fusions are typically seen as an aberration and are shattered immediately. I chose to represent this idea of authoritarian subjugation in my piece by making a shattered face that is being dangled like a puppet on a string by a hand above.
Research
To gain inspiration for the design, I looked at some images and artwork of Fusions from the show to find key similarities, such as having multiple eyes.
Before I could start I needed to practice with the new tools at my disposal. I started by making some test cuts with a laser printer to get the settings right for what I wanted to do.
Ideation
The Original Sketch lacked the second pair of eyes. They were added in during the laser cutting process of this first attempt. The second set of eyes were later added in the next version, as seen in the bottom corner of the page.

This version of the project was actually created, but I decided that I wasn't happy with the outcome and needed to do something else. This did help me practice with the laser cutter which I will use in later projects, so it was ultimately worth the effort to make.

There was also a short lived attempt was made to make a polygonal face. That route was later dubbed too difficult for the amount of time I had and never left the conceptual stage.

Finally I refined the sketches and idea of the final version of the face.

I tried to execute this idea using mat board and Bristol paper. I tried to go for a hand-mirror vibe with the face's pieces floating above it. I ultimately recycled parts of this prototype into the final rendition
